CHALLENGES OF PRIMARY AND POST PRIMARY EDUCATION IN RIVERS STATE: PERSPECTIVE OF PARENTS AND CHILDREN
There is no gain saying the fact that effective implementation is very vital if the primary and post primary school curriculum is to achieve its goals of inculcating permanent literacy and numeracy, ability to communicate effectively, laying a sound basis for scientific and reflective thinking. Efforts of the federal government towards implementation of a sound curriculum for the schools have yielded little or no dividends due to issues which are inherent in the primary and post primary school system in the nation. These problems include under funding, ecology of the classrooms, acute shortage of infrastructures, lack of hygienic sanitary facilities, lack of qualified teachers, and neglect of the mother tongue, amongst others. This paper, written for the SOCIETY EMPOWERMENT TRANSFORMATION INITIATIVE (SETI), examined the challenges of primary education in Rivers State from the perspectives of the parents and the children.
In the process, the paper examined the law and policy of Education in Rivers State in view of their implications to the access of education and the management of school system. It also made suggestions on how to achieve continuous and sustainable educational pursuit amongst the primary and post primary school age children.
It was recommended that poor or disadvantaged students ‘ be encouraged first within the school environments but importantly outside the school environs via external support systems that could come as philanthropic aids and governmental or non-governmental interventions which could create enabling environments for learning and motivation to acquire greater heights in the field of education.
